Apple also releases system updates that keep your Mac secure and stable. When a new major version of OS X is released, you can download the upgrade for free from the App Store. If you're using an older version of OS X, updates are handled through the Software Update utility. But the update will only take you so far as what the base OS will take you. I'm still on on 10.8 and the safari updates I believe have maxed out. Try going direct to apple and download a full safari browser dmg. It will give you the highest available that is compatible. Or just use Firefox. 100% compatible and probably just as safe if not. Unlike other app updates, you can't download Safari 14 from the App Store on your Mac. Instead, the update will be available under System Preferences Software Update. The new Safari update offers.
The only way to increase the Safari version is to update the Mac OS X version. Lion is Mac OS X 10.7.5. Mountain Lion is Mac OS X 10.8.5. Google chrome 20 to 36 free download. Mavericks is Mac OS X 10.9.5. Yosemite is currently Mac OS X 10.10.3.
