I recently started using Google Drive to store my stuffs. Just installed it on my windows machine and to my wonder, Google Drive folder shortcut doesn't exists in Windows Explorer Sidebar as OneDrive or Dropbox or Box.

Explorer

After few google searched and tinkering with Windows Registry, I found a perfect solution which I am sharing here.

Adding the Google Drive app to your desktop will enable you to sync your documents and files from your computer to Google Drive. This story is a part of Business Insider's Guide to Google Drive. Add your Google Drive to Windows 10 Explorer When you sync your Google Drive with Insync, you'll be adding a Google Drive folder (a.k.a Base Folder.) to Windows Explorer. That way, you'll have offline access to your Google Drive files and the changes you make locally will be reflected in the cloud. Re: Add and Open files shared with you in windows explorer (OneDrive for Business) @John Tsalamandris In your onedrive, click on shared with me, then open the folder you want to sync, and the sync button will appear at the top of the folder. Back up all of your content to the cloud – easily access your files in Google Drive and your photos in Google Photos. Download Learn more. Download Backup and Sync for Windows.

Here are the steps

  1. Download Add Google Drive to Windows Explorer File

  2. Open add-google-drive-to-windows-explorer-sidebar.reg file with notepad which you have just downloaded and update the %PATH_TO_GOOGLE_DRIVE% values for target folder path i.e. path of Google Drive folder. For example: If Google Drive folder is located at 'D:Google Drive' then replace %PATH_TO_GOOGLE_DRIVE% with 'D:Google Drive'. If you are copying the path from explorer, make sure you replace all with otherwise it won't work.

  3. Save changes.

  4. Double click the file to add it to registry. Make sure you click yes when prompted.

You should now see Google Drive pinned to the explorer sidebar.

Enjoy.

For those of you who use OneDrive or Dropbox you may have noticed that they create non-removable shortcuts in the Explorer sidebar. If you are also a Google Drive user you'll notice that Google Drive doesn't create the same shortcuts.

Following the steps below you can create the same shortcut for Google Drive: Internet video viewer.

Disclaimer: This was only tested on Windows 10 Professional and Windows 8.1 Professional. Ensure you backup your registry before making any changes.

Installation

  • Download Google Drive.reg
  • Open GoogleDrive.reg in your favourite text editor.
  • Update the %USERPROFILE% values for TargetFolderPath so that the final value is the full path to your Google Drive folder. Ensure that you use in the folder path structure. eg. 'TargetFolderPath'='X:Google Drive'
